Some of Hollywood’s best-known movies have secrets that will shock you
You don’t have to know a lot about movies to know that Hollywood has used some pretty strange ways to do business over the years. After all, that’s show business, baby, and making magic on screen through movies or TV shows takes hard work. But some of these real stories about what happened behind the scenes of our favourite blockbusters are so strange that we can’t help but be shocked. So get ready to pick up your jaw off the floor when we tell you these dark secrets.
Rachel McAdams was on set, but Ryan Gosling tried to get her kicked off.
A lot of people put The Notebook on their lists of all-time favourite romantic movies. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams starred in this 2004 love story. It was an emotional roller coaster, and things weren’t much better on set. In the end, they made up, and the movie ended on a happy note. But not before there was a lot of drama. Star-crossed actors Gosling and McAdams actually didn’t like each other, and Gosling tried to get McAdams kicked off the set. What happened to love at first sight? Plus, that must have been a nightmare to handle!
Kerry Washington’s face had real blood smeared on it by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Django Unchained is the most Tarantino-like movie ever made. As bounty hunters, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz work together to find Foxx’s missing wife, who is still a slave on a plantation owned by Leonardo DiCaprio. In one scene at the manor house, Waltz and Foxx try to steal Kerry Washington’s character, who plays Django’s wife, away from Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. When DiCaprio finds out what they’re up to, he gets angry. In this scene, Leo really cut his hand and was bleeding because of it. He kept acting, and some of that blood ended up on Kerry Washington’s face.
While doing a stunt, Brendan Fraser was so close to killing himself.
One of our favourite actors is Brendan Fraser, and it’s easy to see why. Young people who watched The Mummy: Journey to the Center of the Earth and his other big hits grew up seeing him as the face of action. But when he spoke out about the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of Hollywood’s elite, he put himself in an impossible situation, and his career was ruined as a result. Not only that, but Fraser almost hung himself while trying to do one of his own stunts while filming The Mummy!.
Jim Carrey got training on how to stop torture for “The Grinch.”
Jim Carrey has never been one to back down from a challenge, but when it came to making How the Grinch Stole Christmas, things changed. Fans were worried that Jim Carrey’s Grinch didn’t look real enough, so the makeup artists on set did everything they could to make him look even more like the Grinch every day. The only thing? Every day, this took a full eight hours! Carrey had to go through training against torture just to learn how to sit through these sessions. This could also be why we like Jim Carrey’s role in the movie so much. While the camera was rolling, he did have some of those real, Grinch-like feelings.
The whole cast of “Titanic” got high on PCP.
People’s opinions about how realistic a romantic movie may have been don’t always change when they hear about what happened behind the scenes. The Titanic story is still one of our favourites, though. It has nothing to do with a big fight between our leading actors or a piece of CGI that people may have missed. Instead, it has to do with a cast party and a lot of drugs! It seems that the whole cast got high on PCP by accident one night and had to be hospitalised and watched. Even James Cameron joined in, which makes us love Titanic even more.
While making “Now You See Me,” Isla Fisher almost drowned.
Isla Fisher is a very impressive actress, in part because she is able to deal with her loud husband Sacha Baron Cohen. But in her most recent movie, Now You See Me, Fisher got caught up in an escape trick that almost went horribly wrong. She shot a scene in which she was completely covered by water in a tank. The actress had a release switch to get out of the water tank for the scene, but the switch got stuck and she almost drowned! She’s talked about it in interviews and said she’s very glad things didn’t turn out worse. So are we, to be honest, and directors should keep this in mind every time they plan a stunt, no matter how safe it seems to be.
Jamie Foxx had to play Ray Charles with his eyes closed.
There are two kinds of acting: getting into character and method acting. So, we don’t know which one Jamie Foxx was practising when he played Ray Charles, but his performance was great no matter which one he was doing. Part of the reason must be that Foxx really tried to be a blind man while making the movie. He reportedly had makeup artists glue his eyes shut every day to help him do better, which is a level of dedication we’re not sure we could match. They couldn’t have picked a better actor for this part than Jamie Foxx. The way he could play music and how hard he worked as an actor made this a movie to remember.
The cast of “Poltergeist” didn’t know that the movie used real human bones.
In the United States, the 1970s and 1980s were a great time for horror movies. Directors started pushing the limits of how scary movies could be and what they could talk about. They made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. One of our favourite movies from this time is Poltergeist. If you’ve seen the scene in the swimming pool, you know what we mean. To go even further, did you know that those were real skeletons? Before they started filming, the lead actress found out that she would be swimming with real human bones, which freaked her out a lot.
Leonardo DiCaprio was scared when Jack Nicholson pulled out a real gun.
Jack Nicholson is one of those guys you don’t want to mess with. But even though we love how hard he works at his job, we think he went a little too far when he made The Departed. Nicholson pulled out a real gun in the middle of filming a scene with Leonardo DiCaprio. You might think that Leo would be surprised, but he’s a real pro too. The two just kept rolling until the take was over. Even though it’s great that the two actors got the job done, this wasn’t safe. We’ve seen too many times in history where fake guns have hurt people, let alone real guns.
Toto got more money than the Munchkins did.
We really think of The Wizard of Oz more as a cultural moment than as a classic movie. The movie tried both black-and-white and colour film, which shocked people who were just getting colour TVs for the first time. Plus, it shows some of the not-so-fair things Hollywood did back in the day. Did you know, for example, that Toto the dog was paid more than any of the munchkins to be in the movie? It’s crazy that a part that required lines, singing, and dancing was worth less than just barking, but that’s how Hollywood used to be.
There was a real-life killer in the cast of “The Exorcist.”
When we like an actor in a movie, it’s nice to be able to look at the other things they’ve done. When it comes to extras, things are different. You only really find out an extra’s name if they do something bad. In The Exorcist, they had a background actor do just that. His name was Paul Bateson, and he was arrested for murder after filming. In the movie, Bateson plays the role of the radiologist who comes to check on Linda Blair’s character. There are also rumours that he killed several other people, but this has never been proven.
Carrie-Anne Moss hid an injury because she didn’t want to be replaced.
When it first came out, The Matrix blew people away, in part because of how good Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are in it. But did you know that Moss twisted her ankle early on in the filming and kept acting with it hurt until the end? She was afraid that she would be replaced if she asked for time off to heal an injury when she was younger, so she just pushed through. We don’t think it’s a good idea to run around with a twisted ankle because it can cause serious damage to your body, but we’re glad Moss worked as hard as she did. Without her, the movie wouldn’t be the same.
Real bees were used in ‘Candyman’
Without a doubt, Candyman is one of the best horror movies of all time. This supernatural slasher movie from the early 1990s is about a murderer with a hook hand who is on the run. Realistic horror scenes scare the audience throughout the movie. In one scene, the Candyman looks like it is covered with real bees. They are coming out of his chest and filling his mouth. But if you thought it all seemed almost too real, you’re in luck, because it was! Tony Todd talked the studio into giving him an extra $1000 for every bee sting he got on set, and as a result, he got a big pay raise.
Shelley Duvall cried because “The Shining’s” director was mean to her.
One of the best scary movies of all time is The Shining. Generations of movie fans have remembered Jack Nicholson’s scary performance with gifs, pictures, and fakes of his famous “Here’s Johnny” line. But when you find out that the movie’s main female character, Shelley Duvall, was bullied by the director, Stanley Kubrick, the whole thing seems even scarier. So, you’re seeing real fear and frustration in her eyes. It’s a shame that this kind of behaviour on movie sets went unchecked for so long. Even though things aren’t perfect yet, there are ways for actors and actresses to report unsafe working conditions.
Robert Downey Jr. Put jars of urine all over the set of “Zodiac.”
The Zodiac murders are still some of the creepiest and most strange crimes that have never been solved in the United States. At this point, the real Zodiac killer is probably dead, which is a good thing, but we can’t help but wonder who the real killer was. Still, we wonder if any of the actors in Zodiac were worried about what he would think of them. We know Robert Downey Jr. Wasn’t having a good time because he was allegedly hiding bottles of his pee all over the set! It seems that the long hours made Downey Jr. So mad that he started to get back at his co-stars.
The murder charges were brought against the director of “Cannibal Holocaust.”
The style of horror movies called “found film” is very scary and is meant to make the audience feel like what they’re watching really happened. But the director of Cannibal Holocaust went a little too far when he made the actors sign contracts saying they would not be seen for a year after the movie came out. When the police couldn’t find his actors, he got in trouble, and he ended up in jail on murder charges! One of the director’s coworkers was able to find the actors who had gone into hiding and convince them to come out. But by then, the movie was almost selling itself, so there was no harm done.
